LP GAS "Safety" |
LPG is a mixture of propane and butane gas stored in a tank at around 150psi pressure in much the same way as Calor Gas. The gas tanks we fit are tested to several times this pressure and equipped with three safety valves ensuring maximum safety in the event of a road accident. In fact, we at Chelmsford Autogas, believe our gas tank installations are safer than most petrol tanks. The systems we fit incorporate several safeguards
which automatically shut off the gas should the engine stop unexpectedly.

Economy |
Litre for litre, LPG contains slightly less energy than petrol so your vehicle will use around 15% more gas per mile. However, as LPG is currently less than half the price of petrol, the savings are enormous!
In addition, a high quality LPG conversion fitted by a reputable company, such as Chelmsford Autogas,, with LPG Association membership will increase the resale value of the vehicle by up to £1000
Digital LPG Injection
Early LPG systems were associated with poor running and engine damage because the methods used to control the gas delivery to the engine were somewhat hit and miss.
Beware, these systems are still being fitted “on the cheap” by some companies.
However, recent advances in technology have resulted in the development of Digital Gas Injection which injects a precise amount of gas in exactly the same way as a digital petrol injection system. At Chelmsford Autogas, we only fit digital LPG injection from reputable manufactures who are approved by the LPG Association.
Driving
Operating the LPG system could not be easier. A simple switch on the dashboard selects petrol or gas. A series of LED lamps indicates the level of gas in the tank and when this runs out, the system automatically switches back to petrol and lets you know with a warning buzzer. The gas switch also has two LEDs to tell the driver whether the car is running on LPG or petrol. In fact, this is the only way you will tell the difference. Our customers report absolutely no change to performance or smoothness. Indeed, some engines run noticeably more smoothly on LPG.
Environmental Impact
LPG contains less carbon than petrol and therefore burns much more cleanly. At Chelmsford Autogas, we test all vehicles for emissions before and after conversion and typically achieve a reduction in carbon emissions of at least 10%. For this reason, most LPG converted vehicles are exempt from the London congestion charge. LPG also contains none of the heavy-metallic trace elements present in petrol.
Converting your vehicle
As LPG Association members we at Chelmsford Autogas, are committed to the highest standards of workmanship and service. Although the only visible changes to the car are the addition of the filler cap and gas switch, the conversion does require a considerable number of modifications to the vehicle. Rest assured that our technical staff boast over 20 years practical experience in both the mechanical and body shop environments guaranteeing that your cherished vehicle is in safe hands. Conversion takes three to five days depending on type of vehicle and chosen gas tank installation.
